Top 5 Mistakes Guitar Beginners Make

7 12 2010

Fret

1) Not playing with your fingertips (easy fix).

2) Pressing down too hard or not hard enough (don’t strain your fingers, but you have to get good sound as well)

3) Trying to play songs/riffs they don’t understand

4) Learning from multiple sources, especially wrong ones. (there’s plenty of info out there, but you need step-by-step accurate information.)

5) Not focusing on smooth changes. (this is the hardest part of playing)

No phone, no problem!

3 12 2010

Due to a return gone wrong, I have been without a phone for nearly two weeks. It has been kind of fun to be out of the loop, but inconvenient as well. However, the other day I found myself jamming on the guitar, writing a song for hours, which was the result of not having the distraction of a phone or some other gadget. So, my encouragement today is to turn off those things like phones, computers, tvs, ipad or whatever you have while you are practicing. It will help you be fully attentive to the guitar and your progress will come much faster!

Thankfulness and Worship!

30 11 2010

During the Thanksgiving weekend, we played a lot of worship songs in church about thanks and giving thanks. It was really powerful and we really felt the Lord’s presence! This lead me to wonder later why we (maybe it’s just me) are not more thankful all the time! It seems that thankfulness can pierce through many of the emotions and distractions that guide us away from God! When you realize how much the Lord has done for you (salvation alone is beyond comprehension), everything else pails in comparison! Anyways, that’s my two cents on Thanksgiving! Let’s remember to be thankful every single day!

5 Reasons You Don’t Need To Learn Music Thoery To Play Guitar!

17 11 2010

1) You can learn ANY song WITHOUT music theory!

2) Learning music theory while learning guitar takes the focus off technique and places it on memorizing and figuring out music thoery.

3) People go through years off school to figure out music theory, it’s too complicated for a beginner!

4) You don’t need to fully know music theory unless you are composing a symphony!

5) You can learn a short-form of music theory for guitar chords and keys.

Acoustic or electric?

This is big question for the beginner just starting out. Should I get an acoustic or electric guitar? Most students end up just getting what they are told to get. Lots of teachers will tell ALL beginners to get an acoustic. So what should you do? Whatever YOU want! Do you love the smooth clean sound of an acoustic playing? Then get an acoustic guitar! Or do you like the distorted crunch or soaring solos of the electric guitar? Get an electric! Still can’t decide? Spend some time listening to both. If you can’t decide after that, go with acoustic. Check out my gear guide to learn more about what guitars are good for beginners! And be free to buy the kind of guitar you want!

It’s a string thing!

12 11 2010

Guitar strings come in many varieties and sizes. But what if you could double or possibly triple the life of your strings no matter the size or style? You can! It’s very simple. Your strings are primarily worn down by the oils on your fingers. To double or triple the life of your strings, rub them down with rubbing alcohol after each use!
